Questions to Ask an Eye Doctor Before Your Next Appointment

Eye Doctor — Doctor Checking Eye of Patient in Lafayette, IN
For some, visiting with an eye doctor can be a bit intimidating, especially if this is your first time or you have not been for a while. Your eye doctor will use a lot of machinery and may have you do some vision tests that you’re unfamiliar with. Our eyes are miraculous, detailed organs that work seamlessly with our brain to help us see and understand our surroundings.

Being prepared for questions to ask an eye doctor during your appointment, as well as answering some questions before even stepping foot in the office, can really make it a smooth and easy process with your eye doctor. It will help you get the most out of your eye exam, and that is exactly what our eye doctors want to happen.

Here are some questions to ask an eye doctor that can make you more comfortable with the visit and ensure yourself full understanding of what the examination is all about.

What to Ask Yourself Before the Appointment

  • Why am I coming to visit the eye doctor?
  • Am I looking to get a new pair of glasses?
  • Are my contacts comfortable?
  • Have I noticed problems such as blurry vision, flashes of light, poor night vision, or double vision?
  • Is a vision problem making me nervous about doing certain activities?
  • How well am I taking care of my glasses or contacts? Do I take my contacts out each night and rinse them thoroughly?
  • Have I had any health issues, injuries, operations, or illnesses lately that my eye doctor should know about?
  • Does my family have a history of eye problems?

Preparing before meeting with an optometrist will allow you to have a successful appointment to help you see and feel your best. It’s okay to have your questions written down so you’ll be fully prepared to relay this information to your doctor.

What to Ask your Eye Doctor

Do any of the tests have side effects or any risks?

This will help you know what to expect after the exam is over and what to expect during each test. For example, dilation can cause sensitivity, and glaring is likely to occur.

What can I do to protect, or prolong, my vision?

Your eye appointment isn’t just for you and your current vision; take advantage of this time to be educated by your eye doctor’s expertise and ensure you are cultivating habits for healthy vision in the future.

Do you have any recommendations of where I can get any additional information?

If you are interested in doing some of your own research on eye exams, possible eye conditions, or lens and contact options, an eye doctor is exactly who you should ask for recommendations.

Will any diet/exercise/other lifestyle changes help my eyesight?

One simple change in your lifestyle could help you to see clearer than ever before.

What changes can I expect in my vision as I age?

This will also help you prepare for the future by adjusting certain behaviors if necessary. Your eye doctor can also teach you about any warning signs of common conditions, such as cataracts and glaucoma, which are common after a certain age.

When do you recommend I schedule my next appointment?

Definitely ask this question before leaving the office. It is important to know when you should come back for a check-up.

Asking questions can make you feel more comfortable during your exam. It allows you to become accustomed to the process of having an exam as well as the office atmosphere. Talking to your eye doctor will also help calm nerves and allow you to get to know the person taking care of your health and sight. With a little bit of preparation, your eye exam should be a simple and straightforward process. Take a few moments beforehand to get ready, and your eyes will thank you.

Dr. Steven C. Mather 1401 Union Street Lafayette, Indiana 47904 765.742.1955 Dear Esteemed Patients, After 43 years of dedicated service, it is with mixed emotions that I announce my retirement from my medical practice as of March 9th. It has been an incredible journey, one that I have cherished every moment of, and I am looking forward to spending more time on my new title of Grandpa. Our practice has rich history that dates back to 1946 with Dr. Peterson and in 1959 my uncle, Dr. Robert Mather, succeeded him. I was overjoyed to continue his legacy when I took over the practice in 1989. Over the years, we have built strong relations with our patients, and for that, we are profoundly grateful. Your loyalty and trust have been the driving force behind our success, and we cannot thank you enough for allowing us to be part of your lives for the past 78 years. I am thrilled to inform you that I have chosen to entrust the future of our practice to our friends at Norman and Miller Eyecare. They bring with them a wealth of knowledge, skill, and compassion, ensuring that you will continue to receive the highest quality of care. As I embark on this new chapter of my life, I do so with deep sense of gratitude and appreciation for each and every one of you. While I will miss seeing your familiar faces in the office, I am confident that you will be in excellent hands with Norman and Miller Eyecare. Please join me in welcoming them to our practice and continuing to entrust them with your healthcare needs. They share our commitment to providing personalized, compassionate care, and I am confident that they will uphold the legacy that we have worked so hard to build. They will continue to serve you at our 1401 Union Street location, however, if there is a location more convenient to you, your records will be available at all Norman and Miller Eyecare locations. Thank you once again for your trust and support over the years. It has been an honor and privilege to serve you, and I look forward to watching our practice flourish under the new leadership. With Warm Regards,
